There isn’t a one size fits all, standard approach to nutrition.

Nutrition is just one piece of the puzzle of healthy eating and healthy living.

The food you eat is important, of course, but evolving your diet and building healthy eating habits is mostly about what goes on around your relationship with food:

Your mindset…
Your attitude toward learning…
Your awareness…
Your confidence…
Your community…
Your environment…
Your childhood conditioning…
Your cultural norms…
Your emotional needs…
Your level of preparedness…

And most importantly your habits: the specific patterns in which you automatically do things.

There’s a lot more beyond your “diet” that influences your food choices, which drives your behaviors, which motivates you to stick with this new lifestyle you so desire or give up and try something else.

That’s why, counter-intuitively, at EvolutionEat we focus so little on your diet and the nutrition piece of the puzzle. Especially at the beginning.

Why?

Because most people already know what is and isn’t healthy…

Admit it, you already have a basic understanding of what’s healthy to eat and what’s not.

Deep down, you don’t need some guy on the internet to tell you that. You don’t need another diet book to tell you what to eat.

Yes, there are nuances, of course, and at EvolutionEat, we promote certain ways of eating…but being healthy isn’t some great big secret.

Accessing the right information isn’t the barrier to your success.

In fact, with the internet and the infinite access to all information it provides, it’s often the case I’ll see clients and readers obsess so much about this diet vs that diet, or this meal option versus that, or how many calories, or this many macros, or what sort of protein powder…and on and on and on….to the point that they become paralyzed with indecision.

This is what we call the Paradox of Choice.

The Paradox of Choice – Why More Is Less is a 2004 book by American psychologist Barry Schwartz. In the book, Schwartz argues that eliminating consumer choices can greatly reduce anxiety for shoppers.

“Autonomy and Freedom of choice are critical to our well being, and choice is critical to freedom and autonomy. Nonetheless, though modern Americans have more choice than any group of people ever has before, and thus, presumably, more freedom and autonomy, we don’t seem to be benefiting from it psychologically.”

To cut to the chase…

Paradox of choice and information overload are major barriers to your success.

Obsessing about the details before you master the basics will lead to overwhelm and quitting.

The greatest barrier to your success is your “follow through.”

You know…following through, day after day after day, making choices that are good for you, day after day, even when the initial motivation of “I’m on this new diet” thing dies out. Especially then.

Because it always dies out.

That’s why you haven’t been successful in the past. Because what do you do when you don’t feel motivated any longer? How do you continue to stay healthy, especially when there’s all these distractions and temptations and endless stimulation coming your way?

That’s why, with EvolutionEat, we’re doing things a new way. That’s why we’re devoting 6 months of our lives to the practice of healthy eating.

Remember, healthy eating is a skill you practice and develop over time. Just like if you were learning how to play the piano. This isn’t about being perfect. This is about practice.

You you can’t play Mozart until you master the basics. The same is true of diet and lifestyle training.

Much love,
Daniel
